Training gear that actually changes combat sports work

Combat sports training gear on a gym floor

New gear will not give you a gas tank. Bad gear will absolutely take one away. Here is what I see working in gyms in 2026, and what I would spend money on before another logo hoodie. (We sell hoodies. Buy one after the rope.)

Key takeaways

  • A rope you will jump and gloves that do not wreck your wrists beat any smart gadget.
  • A chest-strap heart-rate monitor still beats a watch in pad work.
  • Smart ropes exist and some of them are good. They are still ropes.
  • Wear kit that dries and does not eat your skin. That is the King Killers part.

Jump rope

If you fight, you already know. A bearing rope you can turn over for three minutes without the cable dying is the whole product. In 2026 the "smart" ropes with counted skips are everywhere. Garage Gym Reviews has been testing them; their 2026 roundup liked Tangram's smart rope for tracking and RX Smart Gear's EVO line if you want to spend real money. I still keep a cheap backup in the bag because smart electronics die when you sweat on them.

Gloves and wraps

I am not going to pretend King Killers makes competition gloves. We do not. Buy a reputable glove from a fight brand you trust (Hayabusa, Winning, Cleto Reyes, whatever your coach allows) and wrap your hands like an adult. Replace bags gloves when the padding is a pancake. Broken hands end camps.

Heart-rate strap

A Polar-style chest strap still reads better than a watch when you are squeezing someone or holding pads. The current Polar H10 is the one I would buy. Use it for road work and conditioning. Do not stare at it during sparring. You already know if you are dying.

Plyo box and a med ball

Not trendy. Still useful. A stable box and one med ball cover a lot of camp conditioning without a $4,000 "performance floor."

Mouthguard you actually boil

Custom if you can. Boil-and-bite if you cannot. The $8 gas-station guard is how people look for teeth in the ring.

What you wear

This is the part I do sell. Shorts that do not ride, rash guards that dry, a Fight Camp Kit so you stop mixing dress shirts with gym bags. If you want heat-weather shorts we already wrote that guide.

Recovery toys

Percussion guns and pneumatic boots are nice if someone else is paying. A walk, sleep, and protein shake are still undefeated. Therabody and similar brands have affiliate programs. I am not linking a commission URL until that account is live.

Train in kit that survives camp

If you are already in camp, skip the fashion drop and grab the Fight Camp Kit or dry-fit rash guards. Free USA shipping over $100. 30-day returns.

Questions I get

Do I need a smart rope?

No. It is a nice-to-have if you like numbers. A dead-simple rope is the requirement.

What gloves for beginners?

Whatever your gym allows, 12-16 oz for bag work. Ask the coach before you buy gold trim.

Watches in sparring?

I take mine off. Straps catch. Screens crack.
